Ricky Wong | “How does an entrepreneur become a good leader after taking the CUHK EMBA?”

Ricky Wong 王維基

Ricky Wong 王維

Chairman and Founder, Hong Kong Television Network Limited
(EMBA Class of 2008)

Ricky Wong was selected as one of “The Top 50 Innovative Retail Leaders in Hong Kong 2017” by Inside Retail Hong Kong.

Ricky Wong is well-known for his entrepreneurial achievements. While being put under a responsibility for a 4,000-employee strong organisation, Ricky found it inadequate in what he had. A strong sense of need urged him to learn more from the CUHK EMBA programme. “The programme inspires me with innovative ideas and structure in management,” he said.

Over the past few years, Ricky has had to face significant changes in his business. Leading his team to overcome these challenges, he had to spend a lot of time telling his colleagues why he had to do what he did. According to him, effective communication with colleagues is one critical element of a good leader, something he credits the EMBA course for giving him that insight.

In the digital age, it is challenging for young executives to get ahead. Ricky advised all executives to “stay foolish, stay hungry.” “Things are changing so rapidly. Staying foolish and hungry allows us to keep a momentum in learning more and better equipping ourselves,” he gave his advice.

Ricky believes that CUHK EMBA provides a unique platform for executives to learn and better equip themselves. It is not any EMBA course but one that combines the East and the West. The most valuable concept he took up was Bagua (八卦) from the Chinese classic I Ching《易經》. “Bagua consists of two parts: the black part and the white part. If the white part gets larger, the black part shrinks, and vice versa. In the business world, if a leader is too strong, the others will shy away from their roles. So, I must keep myself small in order to grow the team,” explained Ricky.

To Ricky, the CUHK EMBA programme did make a difference in his pursuit of personal and career success.

Randy Lai | “Even today, I still apply this thinking model to our company’s development strategies.”

Randy Lai 黎韋詩
CEO, McDonald’s Hong Kong
(EMBA Class of 2005)

Randy Lai was awarded “Professional of the Year, The 2017 Women of Influence Award” by American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong.

In her earlier years, Randy majored in Economics in Canada. Upon returning to Hong Kong, she worked for international corporations including Microsoft and Nike, eventually joining McDonald’s. At that time, although she had a few years of working experience, she felt there was plenty of room for self-improvement. “The Executive MBA programme at CUHK is world renowned for excellence in both theory and practicality. Even my boss was a graduate of this programme, so several colleagues, including myself, were encouraged to sign up and go for it.”

Randy happily reflects on her study days because from Monday to Friday she had to rack her brains to the fullest extent, whereas on weekends, she could improve her learning by absorbing new knowledge from classes. “I remember distinctively in the Marketing course, I was taught the thinking model of using the ‘Left-Right Circles.’ The ‘Left Circle’ represents consumers’ needs. The ‘Right Circle’ represents company competence. The more the two circles overlap, the more our products satisfy customers’ needs. Even today, I still apply this thinking model to our company’s development strategies.”

Making the acquaintance of classmates from different backgrounds became another plus for Randy. “Some of my classmates came from the government or volunteer groups. I tended to see things from a commercial angle and their ways of thinking quite differed from mine. Being able to communicate with them freely really broadened my mind.” It seems to us Randy really had a lot to gain. No wonder she goes back to CUHK year after year as a guest lecturer to share her marketing insights.

Andrew Tsui | “As a social entrepreneur, the key to lead a social enterprise is to build a viable business model.”

Andrew Tsui 徐伽

Co-founder, Rooftop Republic
(EMBA Class of 2013)

The Rooftop Republic was awarded the 2017 Outstanding Social Enterprise (Meritorious) Award and Innovative Social Enterprise Award by the Home Affairs Bureau and the Social Enterprise Advisory Committee.

Andrew Tsui is a social entrepreneur with a mission of integrating urban farming into our city life. His motivation to explore social entrepreneurship was further developed in the CUHK EMBA programme. Prior to joining the programme, he found a strong urge within himself to seek clarity and consolidation of mind and heart before taking on new roles and responsibilities. While researching the various prestigious EMBA programmes, Andrew found that The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) offered a programme with an inherent advantage: it was uniquely rooted in Asian values supported by a global perspective. This is a great fit for someone envisioning a blueprint to grow a venture based in Hong Kong and bringing it to the world one day.

Andrew acknowledges that the theories and frameworks he learned through the programme put him in good stead. “To lead a social enterprise, we have to grasp our society’s underlying needs today and in the future. The key is then building a viable business model. The skills and knowledge that I picked up from the programme prove to be beneficial not only for me but also for my team as we work together in putting these learnings into practice.”

Coming out of the EMBA Programme, Andrew set up Rooftop Republic. The network he built during his EMBA studies enabled him to take a bigger leap. “As we were building the business model, I took the opportunity to share my idea with my EMBA classmates. After graduation, a group of my classmates set up a private fund for investments. The board performed due diligence, evaluated the social impact and financial projections of our social startup and we managed to secure a seed funding,” reported Andrew with great delight.

Andrew is grateful for having learnt the importance of understanding “market needs” in the EMBA course. “Increasingly people want to enjoy green spaces that can be used to grow some produce in our city environment. Once these spaces are available, our team at Rooftop Republic offers to manage it with local farmers and trained urban farming assistants. The team also designs innovative programmes to engage the relevant stakeholders on the future of food and green living. It is by these efforts that a more inclusive community and sustainable habits can be built over the long run.” His social enterprise business is just about doing that.

William Allen | “The EMBA network is excellent and the focus on China has offered me a new perspective for my ‘Asian’ future.”

William Allen
Director B2B APAC, L’Occitane (Far East) Ltd.
(EMBA Class of 2018)

I’ve really enjoyed my study at CUHK’s EMBA. The course is rigorous and rewards effort. The EMBA network is excellent and the focus on China has offered me a new perspective.

I should first say that I was pleasantly surprised to discover that EMBAs even existed; having reached my mid-30s, I believed that I’d missed out on the opportunity to take an MBA, and wasn’t aware of an alternative. The great thing about CUHK’s EMBA is that unlike a full-time course or part-time programme with classes held on weekdays, it gives students the opportunity to develop new professional and life skills without suffering the opportunity cost of taking time out from work.

The eight core subjects studied during the first year offer a very good grounding in the competencies required for business management. The coursework and examinations are demanding and yield the expected sense of self-improvement, but the workload is perfectly manageable if one is good at organising one’s time.

For my part I’ve come to realise that the pursuit of knowledge is only part of the picture; in doing an EMBA, you are setting forth on a shared journey with an exciting network of people and benefitting from their wisdom and experiences. I appreciate and value this fact and other intangibles such as growing friendships more than any other factors.

Finally, I should mention the China focus. As a westerner in Hong Kong, I have been really happy to have this new perspective on region. In a way, it is the “icing on the cake” of my 4-year experience of living in Hong Kong. I feel well prepared for my “Asian” future.

George Wong | “I realised that I, as a company founder, had to seek change to avoid being eliminated from the market.”

George Wong 黃銳林
Chairman, Bauhaus Holdings Ltd.

(EMBA Class of 2014)

“Your left circle has left you forever. You, as the right circle, can only try hard to catch up.” This is learned from the first lesson in marking in my first year of study.

In my second year of study, I learned about the Yin-Yang concept in the first lesson on the I Ching.

These two flashes of wisdom from just two lessons showered me with new insights, and in the entire course, there are certainly more treasures to uncover.

After repeating the same daily routine for more than 20 years, I had somehow become a dehydrated sponge, with dried-out creativity and a stereotyped management style, gradually falling behind the wheel of time. I realised that I had to seek change to avoid being eliminated from the market. Continuous learning is the best way to seek self-development and self-improvement. I am glad that I have engaged in the EMBA programme at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

The stringent regulations of this programme have brought me, a company founder so used to wilfulness and freedom for more than 20 years, back to discipline and order. This benefit alone exceeds my expectations.

The students in the EMBA programme are all outstanding elites and represent top talent from various sectors. I am so lucky to have met them, shared with them and learned from them. The gains I have made are simply immeasurable in monetary terms.

Activities of various nature constitute important parts of the programme as a whole. Brilliant professors and scholars, along with leaders from different industry sectors acting as guest speakers who add value to the programme, bring me knowledge, inspiration, interest, vision and connection with the external world.

Studying in this programme nourishes me, that former dehydrated sponge, with the nutrients I need to thrive. I have re-equipped myself, regained energy and am now ready to restart my journey.

Karen Cheung | “The world is changing much faster than you can imagine. It is more important than ever to continue to learn and step outside of your comfort zone.”

Karen Cheung 張嘉欣
Chief Financial Officer, AsiaWorld-Expo Management Ltd.

(EMBA Class of 2016)

“Are you hungry? Are you foolish?” As Chief Financial Officer, it was once hard for me to answer “Yes” to these questions, but that is my answer after experiencing life in CUHK’s EMBA programme.

The more I learn and contemplate, the more I am eager to explore. We must unlearn and then relearn; this is the key to unlocking our ability to change and succeed in an uncertain, unpredictable and constantly evolving environment.

The people around me are truly inspiring. We have vigorous discussions during class, and even after class, particularly on how modern management methods collide with traditional methods, and on how to integrate the Western and Chinese cultures.

The emphasis on social contribution is another unparalleled perspective that makes the programme unique. It is the core value for creating positive influence in the business community and for the betterment of society.

The world is changing much faster than you can imagine. It is more important than ever to continue to learn and step outside of your comfort zone. “A thousand-mile voyage starts with the first step” (千里之行始於足下). I have made the first small step and it has been truly rewarding.

Kazuhiko Nishioka | “This programme is ideal for me as a Japanese expatriate working in Hong Kong.”

Kazuhiko Nishioka 西岡和彥
COO, CORNES Technologies Limited

(EMBA Class of 2017)

My principal objective in pursuing the CUHK EMBA was to broaden and deepen my knowledge of management and to develop my understanding of business in Asia and Western countries. Now, I am sure my decision was correct. This programme is ideal for me as a Japanese expatriate working in Hong Kong.

I firmly believe that Hong Kong is the best place to study Asian and Western business because of its mixed cultural background. I can even study my country, Japan. My classmates are enthusiastic to learn different points of view, which encourages me to study Japanese practices to share them with my classmates. I am always so impressed by my classmates’ insightful comments about Japan from their international business experiences.

My classmates and I are making important business decisions every day. EMBA students are studying not only for the long-term future but also for tomorrow’s decisions. This programme provides many practical and inspiring things that I can use tomorrow.

This programme is tough and challenging, but it definitely sharpens my critical thinking skill to help me reach my own decisions. This ability could not be acquired just by reading books.

Last but not least, the internal and external networks are so powerful here. You will be able to make mutually supportive relationships and strong friendships.
